YOUNG ADULT SERVICE PROGRAM (YASP)

YASP APPLICATION IS NOW LIVE!

YASP (Young Adult Service Program) connects Asian-American high school and college students with summer internships at various community organizations and the offices of local elected officials throughout New York City. Co-hosted by The Korea Times, YASP has been able to provide Asian American youth the opportunity to serve their local community and to learn the importance of service since 2001.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for YASP, applicants must be an Asian-American identifying high school or college student whose school and/or home address is within New York City (Five Boroughs). High school students must be a sophomore or above as of Fall 2021 and college students must be a freshman or above as of Fall 2021.
Host Sites will include: Communities Resist, Fifth Avenue Committee, Asian Americans for Equality, Queens Botanical Garden, Offices of Elected (City & State Officials), and more.

NOTE: Please read carefully as the requirements will be different for high school and college interns. There is also a FAQ section. Please check that out before calling/emailing.

Responsibilities (High School)

All YASP high school interns will be responsible for the following:

  • Attend orientation, graduation, and three/four required workshops
  • Submit all time-sheets on time to be eligible for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA)
  • Volunteer for at least 15 hours/week
  • Complete two evaluations

How to Apply (High School)

A completed and signed application (Online Form). The application will consist of the following:

  • Applicant Info (You will be required to submit at least 1 social media account. If the account does not include a headshot you will be asked to provide one)
  • Applicant Skills
  • Extracurricular Activities (You will be required to submit at least one activity)
  • Previous Work/Volunteer Experiences
  • References (You will be required to submit at least 1 professional, non-relative reference: Name, phone number, email, relation to applicant)
  • Short Answer
    • Why do you want to participate in YASP?
    • What are your future goals and interests?
  • Essay (You will be asked to submit a short essay (Min. 200, Max 500 Words) based on your choice of one of the three prompts below:
  1. How has COVID-19 affected you and how did you adjust/overcome it? What have you learned?
  2. Write about your greatest achievement.
  3. How was the place where you’ve grown up impacted who you are?

How to Apply (College Intern)

A completed and signed application (Online Form). The application will consist of the following:

  • Applicant Info (You will be required to submit at least 1 social media account. If the account does not include a headshot you will be asked to provide one)
  • Applicant Skills
  • References (You will be required to submit at least 1 professional, non-relative reference (Name, phone number, email, relation to applicant))
  • Resume/Cover Letter Submission
    • Please make sure to include skills. Examples of these include (Proficient in Microsoft Office, coding languages, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Public Speaking, Research, Translation, etc.)
  • Cover Letter
    • In your cover letter, you will be asked to address the following points:
      • Your current future career goals
      • How your participation in YASP would help you achieve those goals
      • What is one community issue you feel passionate about and why
  • Interview Availability
  • Most recent transcript (Email to yasp@kcsny.org with File titled: [First Name, Last Name] Transcript; Subject: “[First Name, Last Name] 2021 YASP College Application”

Deadline (High School & College)

For consideration for Summer 2021, all applications must be submitted by Friday, May 7, 2021 at 11:59 PM (EST). Please note that all applications are on a rolling basis.

All materials outside of the application must be submitted as PDF attachments, in a single email to yasp@kcsny.org With “[First Name, Last Name] 2021 YASP High School Application” or “[First Name, Last Name] 2021 YASP College Application” in the subject line. The YASP Team may request supplemental information as needed. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please make sure to submit all required materials on time.

Interviews will be scheduled once all required materials have been submitted.
