Language barriers are a major issue in the immigrant community. More than one million New Yorkers have limited English proficiency, representing 28% of the foreign-born population of New York State. As part of our Education program, KCS seeks to alleviate this barrier by offering adult literacy courses. The Education department also offers citizenship classes to help with the growing demand of clients that need to pass the oral and written Naturalization Test.
Students take a diagnostic test to evaluate their English proficiency skills and are placed accordingly – “Low beginning”, “High beginning”, “Low Intermediate”, “High intermediate”, “Advanced”. Classes are offered in the morning, afternoon, and the evening to best accommodate for working schedules.
These classes are provided for free with the generous support of:
1. NYC-DYCD-Immigration Services
2. NYC-DYCD-City Council Discretionary
