FY'07 is our ESOL/Civics Education Literacy Program's 6th Contractual Year funded by NYC-DYCD. KCS currently has two sites in Queens offering ESOL and Citizenship Classes to the communities, one in Elmhurts and another in Flushing. Through this program's efforts, KCS is playing an important role in integrating immigrants into mainstream American society.

During FY'07, KCS offered 6-8 educational classes for each fiscal quarter with the total of 1,200 instructional hours for the enitre fiscal year. These educational classes included one Basic ESL Class, two Beginning ESL Classes, two Intermediate ESL Classes, one Advanced ESL Class, and two or three Citizenship Classes for each fiscal year.

This fiscal year, we had more than 300 immigrants and citizens registered, tested, and enrolled into our program. The number of students projected by NYC-DYCD for us to service was only 200 for each fiscal year. This fiscal year, the NYC-DYCD required a much more efficient classroom management, better student attendance records and higher student progress expectations. Therefore, we ahd to limit the number of students in each class and many students had to be placed on our waiting list. The Average Daily Attendance for our FY'07 was over 20. NYC-DYCD's projection for our program was 15.

LCS' ESOL/Civics Program not only accommodates Korean and Chinese immigrants, also serves immigrants from Afghanistan, Columbia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Peru, and Vietnam. Some of our students come as far as Connecticut, New Jersey, and the other four New York City boroughs of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. In the future, KCS hopes the program will reach out to many more communities as more new immigrants come to reside in Queens. Our ESOL/Civics Education Literacy Program will continuously be in high demand.
