Flushing Senior Center
       
 
   

Under a contract with NYC Department for the Aging, KCS has run a new senior center program in Flushing since September 2002. Starting with catering services for lunch meals, the KCS Korean American Senior Center of Flushing (KASCF) has modified meal services from catering to on-site meal preparation, then added breakfast services and telephone assurance & friendly visiting services, and developed ample services in the area of recreation/education, case assistance, and information & referrals.

Congregate Meals (Breakfast & Lunch): In FY 2007, KASCF utilized over 180% of the contracted services. The contract requires KASCF to serve 130 seniors per day, and KASCF served a daily average of 230 senior citizens. The over-utilization was made possible by the dedication and commitment of volunteers, benevolent supporters, advisory board members, and staff. (The number of breakfast meals served for FY'07 came to 13,670 which are 175% of the contracted units, and the number of lunch meals served was 57,591 which are 180% of the contracted units.)

Education/Recreation: The education & recreation services include English (Beginner/Intermediate), New York Tiems Reading, Discussion, Chinese for Beginner, Calligraphy, Asian Painting, Arts Class, Arts & Crafts, Music Class, Chinese Folk Songs, Korean Folk Songs, Sports Dance, Social Dance, Korean Dance, Dahn Yoga, and korean Chess & Baduk classes. (Total 1,166 units for FY'07).

KASCF also provide Nutrition Education at least 10 sessions per year by a qualified nutrition consultant as well as workshops and screenings on health issues such as Dental Education/ Screening, free Flu-shots, Eastern Medicine, Medicaid Choice, Caregiver Support in conjunction with hospitals, health care providers, and community organizations. In addition, KASCF offers various tours/trips with KSC Korean American Senior Center of Corona (KASCC).

Case Assistance: KASCF provides assistance to senior citizens applying for social benefits/entitlements including Social Security Retirement & Survivors Insurance, SSI, Public Assistance, Medicare, Medicaid, Reudced Fare, SCRIE, IT-214, HEAP, STAR, Food Stamp, Public Housing, EPIC, Medicare Part D, Life Line, and others. Many volunteers involve in this service area as translators and/or interview escorts. (Total 970 units for FY'07).

Information/Referral: Services are available over telephone or walk-ins for information & referrals on entitlements and other benefits. (Tota  6,019 units for FY'07).

Friendly Visiting/ Telephone Assurance: These services are to reduce isolation, provide comfort, help, and friendship, and to promote the health and safety of homebound older people through routine telephone contact or home visiting. It is conducted through the work of volunteers, and the friendly visitors of Jong Ock Yoou. At the beginning the services recieved lukewarm response by the homebound seniors, but more seniors have since become more open minded and enjoy the benefits of these services. (Total: Tel. 663, Fv. 249 units for FY'07).

Van for Disabled Seniors: We are picking up and dropping off Senior Citizens who are uncomfortable from their homes to the senior center and from the senior center back to their homes since July 11, 2005. Although we want a lot of seniors, we are starting with people who live closer to our senior center.
