Young Adult Service Program (YASP)


The 2019 YASP application is now open

Mission

YASP (Young Adult Service Program) connects Asian American young adults (High School/College students) with service learning opportunities, leadership development, and professional development by placing them at nonprofit organizations throughout New York City for summer internships. Co-hosted by The Korea Times, YASP has been able to provide Asian American youth the opportunity to serve their local community and to learn the importance of service since 2001.

Eligibility

To be eligible for YASP, applicants must be an Asian-American identifying high school or college student whose school and/or home address is within New York City (Five Boroughs). High school students must be a sophomore or above as of Fall 2019 and college students must be a freshman or above as of Fall 2019.

Host Sites will include:

  • Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce
  • Queens Botanical Garden
  • Asian American Federation
  • Offices of Various Elected City and State Officials
  • And more

NOTE: Please read carefully as the requirements will be different for high school and college interns. There is also a FAQ section. Please check that out before calling/emailing.

Awards & Responsibilities

High School
✓ Attend orientation, graduation, and two required workshops
Submit all time sheets on time to be eligible for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA)
Volunteer for at least 15 hours/week
✓ Complete two evaluations – one midway and one at the end
College
✓ Attend orientation, graduation, and two required workshops
Submit all time sheets on time to be eligible for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA)
Volunteer for at least 20 hours/week
✓ Complete two evaluations – one midway and one at the end
✓ Receive transportation stipends

How To Apply

High School

✓ A completed and signed application (Online Form). The application will consist of the following:

  • Applicant Info
    • You will be required to submit at least 1 social media account. If the account does not include a headshot you will be asked to provide one.
  • Applicant Skills
  • Extracurricular Activities
    • You will be required to submit at least 1 activity
  • Previous Work/Volunteer Experiences
  • References
    • You will be required to submit at least 1 professional, non-relative reference (Name, phone number, email, relation)
  • Short Answer
    • What is your favorite quote?
  • Essay
    • You will be asked to submit a short essay (Min. 200, Max 500 Words) based on your choice of one of the three prompts below
      • Write about a time when someone told you something about yourself that changed your perspective.
      • Write about the first time you felt different or alone.
      • Write about a lesson you recently learned and how it changed your outlook.
  • Interview Availability

✓ Most recent transcript (official or unofficial is acceptable) emailed to yasp@kcsny.org

College

  • Please make sure to include skills. Examples of these include (Proficient in Microsoft Office, coding languages, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, public speaking, research, translation, etc.)

    • Your current future career goals.
    • How your participation in YASP would help achieve those goals.
    • What is one community issue you feel passionate about and why?

Deadline

High School

For consideration for Summer 2019, applications should be submitted by Friday, May 31, 2019. Please note that all applications are on a rolling basis.

All materials outside of the application (online form) must be submitted as PDF attachments, in a single email to yasp@kcsny.org With “[First Name, Last Name] 2019 YASP High School Application” in the subject line.

YASP may request supplemental information as appropriate. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please make sure to submit all required materials.

Interviews will be scheduled once all required materials have been submitted.

College

For consideration for Summer 2019, applications should be submitted by Tuesday, April 30, 2019. Please note that applications are on a rolling basis.
